Heritage Note

Traditional Croatian tattooing dates back centuries and was particularly practiced by Catholic women in parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dalmatia, and surrounding regions. Known as sicanje or bocanje, these hand-tattooed symbols often featured crosses, sun motifs, circles, and geometric patterns representing faith, protection, identity, and family heritage.

Passed from one generation to the next, these markings became a lasting expression of cultural pride and resilience.
