Ban Josip Jelačić remains one of the most important figures in Croatian history. Serving as Ban of Croatia during the 19th century, he became known for fighting against foreign domination and advocating for Croatian autonomy, unity and national identity within the Habsburg Empire.

In 1848, he abolished serfdom in Croatia and became a lasting symbol of resilience, leadership and cultural pride.

Today, his image stands as a symbol of resilience, pride and cultural heritage, remembered through the iconic statue overlooking Zagreb’s main square.
