Heritage Note

Mokoš (Mokosh) is a goddess recorded in early Slavic tradition and is notable as the female deity named among the gods of the medieval Kyivan pantheon. Her precise role in pre-Christian belief is not completely preserved, and many of the meanings associated with her today have been reconstructed through language, folklore and later tradition.

She has commonly been connected with earth, moisture and fertility, while later traditions and interpretations also associate her with women, textile work and the cycles of everyday life.

This artwork does not attempt to recreate a single historical depiction of Mokoš. Instead, it draws from the broader visual language of Slavic folk culture, floral ornament, grain, birds and decorative pattern, to create a contemporary interpretation of an ancient figure.
